Patek Philippe Takes Worlds Most Expensive Watch Record With The Grandmaster Chime 6300A-001

Patek Philippe’s Grandmaster Chime 6300A-001 has just broken the world record for most expensive watch. It was auctioned by Christies on the 9th of November 2019 as part of the Only Watch Auction previously written about here – https://www.officialwatches.com/blog/only-watch-auction-2019/

The 6300A-001 is the first Patek Philippe Grande-Sonnerie wristwatch ever added to the company’s current collection. It is an unique stainless steel version boasting two dials in rose gold and black ebony. The reversible case, adorned with a hand-guilloched hobnail pattern, is notable for its patented reversing mechanism. It is an exceptional grand complication movement which features 20 complications including no fewer than five chiming modes, two of which are patented world firsts: an acoustic alarm that strikes the preselected time and a date repeater sounding the date on demand.

It sold to an anonymous telephone bidder for 31,000,000 Swiss Francs which converts to £24.2 million GBP.

The previous record-holder for a wristwatch was the Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona that was once owned by Newman himself which sold at Phillips New York in 2017 for $17.8m (approx. £14m). The overall record, however, was held by another Patek: the Supercomplication pocket-watch made for famed US collector Henry Graves Jr, which sold at Sotheby’s in 2014 for more than $24m (approx. £18.8m).
