F.P. Journe Octa Zodiaque in Platinum with brass movement!
Few independent watchmakers inspire the same level of fascination as F.P. Journe. François-Paul Journe was profoundly influenced by 18th-century horology, studying watchmaking in Paris, and drawing inspiration from figures such as Abraham-Louis Breguet and George Daniels.
He went on to open his own workshop, producing watches and clocks on commission. After developing complex movements for major watch brands, François-Paul introduced F.P. Journe in 1999 and exhibited his first watches at the Basel watch fair shortly after. Beyond their technical innovation, F.P. Journe watches are recognised for their elegant and distinctive design language.
Following the introduction of the Tourbillon Souverain and Chronomètre à Résonance, François Paul Journe unveiled his first self-winding watch with the Octa collection in 2001. In typical F.P.Journe fashion, this automatic movement was conceived as a fully integrated calibre, designed from the outset to accommodate a wide range of complications.
This caliber served as a foundation for the Octa Zodiaque presented here, an exceptional and rare model that marked several firsts for the brand. Introduced in 2004, it was F.P. Journe’s first limited edition, and his first model to feature central hands. Limited to 150 pieces, the Zodiaque was developed as a nod to astronomic complications, which have long been a cornerstone of horology.
The slate grey dial is unmistakably F.P. Journe, combining an asymmetric layout with an applied hour frame secured by visible screws. It features a small second subdial, a power reserve graduated to 120 hours and a large date positioned at 11:30 o’clock. Although the movement offers 160 hours of power reserve, Journe chose to display 120 hours, corresponding to the period of optimal chronometric performance.
The star of the show is the highly unusual Zodiaque complication, positioned on the dial’s periphery. The Octa Zodiaque displays both the zodiac sign and the current month via a rotating disc, read against a marker at 12 o’clock. The months are written in Latin to match the Zodiac sign’s naming convention, with a dedicated glyph accompanying each sign.
The transparent caseback reveals the Caliber 1300, which occupies a singular place in F.P Journe’s history. In addition to its rarity in this unusual Zodiac configuration, it is also among the very last brass movements produced by the Manufacture. Journe’s brass movements are highly prized by collectors. They represent the “early” F.P. Journe period, with approximately 2000 examples produced across all lines before the brand transitioned to 18k gold movements.
The two striking visual characteristics of these movements are the unusual circular Côtes de Genève on the bridges, and the finely hand guilloché off-centred gold rotor. Perlage decorates the baseplate, while angled and polished components demonstrate the meticulous attention devoted to finishing.
Despite its technical complexity, wearability has not been overlooked. The platinum case measures 40mm in diameter, departing from F.P. Journe’s earlier 38mm Octa models, and offering a beautiful presence on the wrist. The signature F.P. Journe knurled crown adds a touch of elegance and integrates perfectly with the design.
Guided by the motto "Invenit et Fecit" (Invented and Made), F.P Journe is committed to horological innovation and rigorous craftsmanship. Limited to just 150 pieces, the Octa Zodiaque stands as a rare expression of the brand’s philosophy and a niche model that captures a pivotal moment in F.P Journe’s history.
Enthusiasm for F.P. Journe watches has reached remarkable levels. In December 2025, a unique F.P. Journe prototype linked to Francis Ford Coppola sold for over USD 10 million at auction, further confirming the brand’s position within contemporary independent watchmaking.
